Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee endured another disappointing outing in the Premier League.
Since joining the club in July 2024, the 24-year-old has struggled to make a significant impact at Old Trafford. With only nine goals in 73 appearances for the Red Devils, his contributions have been minimal. This season has been particularly poor, as he has managed just two goals in 24 matches.
Given a rare start due to Benjamin Sesko’s absence with a shin problem, Zirkzee failed to seize the opportunity. He often appeared isolated in attack and was substituted after 65 minutes for Patrick Dorgu.
The Dutch striker had one shot on goal in the first half—a header from Matheus Cunha’s cross that drifted over the bar. He recorded no shots on target and completed zero dribbles. Zirkzee carried the ball forward three times but did not provide any key passes. In total, he completed only 11 passes in a subdued performance.
His physical battles were also lacking, winning just four of 11 duels and failing to make any tackles, as the Sunderland defense frequently overpowered him.
Following the match, manager Carrick defended his striker in the post-match press conference, but the performance represented a clear missed opportunity for Zirkzee to prove his worth.
The former Bologna forward has been linked with a summer departure from Old Trafford. Based on this display, it is difficult to argue against such a move being in the best interests of all parties.
