As anticipated, the Virginia Tech Hokies have earned their place in the NCAA Division I Softball Championship, though they will be traveling to the Baton Rouge Regional instead of hosting. The Hokies are set to face South Alabama on Friday at 4 p.m. ET, with LSU and Akron also in the regional bracket.

LSU, which finished the season at 37-13, will serve as the regional host. This decision has sparked debate, as Virginia Tech spent much of the year ranked among the top 16 teams and had a strong case for hosting a regional. When the bracket was revealed, questions arose over why the Hokies were not seeded higher. Various explanations surfaced, including rumors of hotel availability issues and conflicts with graduation. Tech Sideline obtained a statement from the NCAA, which indicated that the organization simply did not view Virginia Tech as a top-16 seed. The hotel excuse was also cited, despite not being a concern in previous years.

The Hokies made a compelling argument to host: they finished third in the ACC and lost narrowly to the top seed in the ACC Championship (2-1). Additionally, they went 6-0 against SEC opponents, including two wins over Georgia, which is a No. 3 seed in the Athens Regional and is hosting a regional themselves.

If Virginia Tech can advance out of the Baton Rouge Regional, they will face the winner of the Tuscaloosa Regional, which includes Alabama, Southeastern Louisiana, Belmont, and USC Upstate.

While it is disappointing not to host, the positive note is that this marks the Hokies’ seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division I Softball Championship.

Prove ’em wrong, ladies!!
