With the 2026 North and Central America World Cup squad announcement just days away, the pressure is mounting. This final K League 1 match before the official roster unveiling on the 16th serves as a major motivator for players hoping to earn a spot.
Ahead of the 14th-round clash between Gangwon FC and Daejeon Hana Citizen at Gangneung High1 Arena, both head coaches discussed their players’ chances of making the national team. Gangwon boss Jeong Gyeong-ho named Lee Gi-hyeok as a potential candidate. The center-back has been one of the league’s top performers this season, capable of playing across multiple positions including left-back and central midfielder, making him a surprise contender. Midfielders Seo Min-woo and Lee Yu-hyeon are also in the mix.
“Naturally, this is a huge motivation for the players,” Jeong said before the match. “But they must remember what to focus on. Chasing the result alone can lead to problems. I hope Gi-hyeok, Min-woo, and Yu-hyeon stay focused on the process. They should not try to stand out. The key is to give their best in what we are trying to do, and good results will follow.” He stressed that rather than forcing attention, fulfilling their roles on the pitch is what can earn them a place in the national team.
On the Daejeon side, right-back Kim Moon-hwan and left-back Lee Myung-jae are in contention. Coach Hwang Seon-hong commented, “I believe both can make the squad. I hope they do well. Coach Hong Myung-bo knows them well, so I have expectations. But we’ll have to see how things go. For Lee Myung-jae, there is some pressure. His form is improving, but he must not overdo it.”
Gangwon currently sits sixth with 18 points, while Daejeon is eighth with 16. This match could be a crucial turning point for both teams.
“There is some fatigue, but we will maintain our style,” Jeong added. “The opponent has a weapon. They are a team that can change momentum. We need to watch them closely.” Hwang also warned about Gangwon’s high pressing. “Their pressure is very intense. It will be a battle to escape it.
