Brazilian midfielder Julio Romão has lifted the Hungarian Cup with Ferencváros, celebrating a comeback from injury as his team eyes the league title in the final round.
The club defeated Zalaegerszeg 1-0 in extra time on Saturday, securing the trophy after losing in the finals of the previous two seasons. Romão, who struggled with a leg injury earlier this season, returned in time to contribute to the cup run and the late push in the league.
“This title means a lot because I had a tough season. I suffered a leg injury but managed to recover and come back strong. Being crowned with the trophy feels amazing. I’m grateful and dedicate this victory to my family, who always supports me. We’ll keep pushing for more,” Romão said.
Ferencváros enters the last matchday of the 2025/2026 Hungarian Championship in second place with 65 points, just one behind leaders Gyori. To claim the league title, Romão’s side must beat Zalaegerszeg again and hope Gyori slips up.
“We believe we can still be champions. We have faith. We’ll do our job, play at home with our fans’ support, and hope for a stumble from our opponent. We want to win this title, and we’re focused. It’s about having a good week of preparation,” the Brazilian added.
Romão’s performances in Europe also attracted interest from Botafogo late last year. The Rio de Janeiro club made three official offers for the midfielder, with the second reaching €1.5 million (around R$9.7 million). However, Ferencváros rejected all bids, demanding the full release clause of €3 million, which prevented the transfer back to Brazil at that time.
