Romania’s women’s table tennis team finished third at the London World Team Championships, falling to China 0-3 in the semifinals. Although they secured a medal, their joy quickly turned into frustration upon returning to their country.
After securing a spot in the top four, the Romanian players, led by Bernadette Szőcs, jumped onto the table in celebration—marking their first World Championship podium finish since 2000 in Kuala Lumpur. However, upon arrival at Otopeni Airport, the welcoming flowers and applause couldn’t mask the players’ anger.
Key player Bernadette Szőcs, veteran Elizabeta Samara, and young talent Andreea Dragoman issued an ultimatum to the Romanian Sports Authority. Samara stated that she and her teammates have received no bonuses for two full years. Despite retaining their passion and motivation, going two years without compensation is eroding their enthusiasm.
Samara, now in the later stages of her career, mentioned she had hoped to continue playing for two more years, but the financial strain is making it difficult to sustain. Szőcs added that the bonuses owed to her are substantial and urged a swift resolution. Dragoman emphasized that while she has achieved results and won medals, the lack of recognition and reward threatens her long-term motivation.
The public statements from the three players quickly drew widespread attention. Media outlets noted that for athletes representing their country, the gap between honor and survival can be more disheartening than any match score.
