The Japan Bobsleigh, Luge, and Skeleton Federation President Takahiro Kitano, 62, issued an apology on Tuesday via the federation’s official website for his inappropriate remarks. In January, the federation overlooked a rule change regarding qualification for the men’s two-man bobsleigh event at the Milan-Cortina Olympics, effectively eliminating the possibility of participation. During subsequent hearings on the matter, Kitano made inappropriate comments. He clarified that he will not resign from his position and intends to continue his duties.
The full text of the apology is as follows:
“Apology for Inappropriate Remarks by the Federation President
Regarding reports that inappropriate remarks were made during a federation meeting, I sincerely apologize to the athletes and all stakeholders involved in bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton for the inconvenience and concern caused.
In January of this year, it came to light that the federation dispatched athletes to international competitions without properly verifying Olympic qualification criteria. Since then, as president, I have personally conducted daily hearings with those involved to gather information. During these discussions, there were instances where I lacked composure. Regardless of the circumstances, using such expressions is unacceptable for someone leading a public sports organization, and I deeply regret my lack of awareness.
I take the criticisms seriously and extend my deepest apologies to the athletes, stakeholders, and everyone who felt offended. The federation is currently working to improve its organizational structure and governance. I will continue to fulfill my responsibilities and strive to rebuild trust with all parties involved.”
Kitano also serves as a vice president of the Japan Olympic Committee.
